Digital apps. Most business and social interactions are done through these programs that run on computer platforms, most commonly on your smartphone. They are a fact of life in the 21st century.

Despite their ubiquity, digital app myths persist. Some of them can keep even the well-educated and informed from benefiting from the utility and convenience these programs offer, especially those with mobility limitations or busy schedules.

We’ll look at five persistent digital app myths and why you shouldn’t let them keep you from making use of modern digital solutions.

Myth No. 1: Only Young People Can Use Digital Apps

An age-old issue is one about modern technologies and, well, age. One of the most common digital app issues is that they are only usable by young people. It doesn’t help that discussions of generations often insist on labeling the youngest ones as “digital natives,” implying that their elders must be clueless “foreigners” to these tools.

Like any tool, using digital apps can be learned, and often it’s just a matter of actually using them. If you’re from an older generation and are afraid you might wreck something in that smartphone your kids bought you, it doesn’t hurt to ask the young ones to walk you through its use.

If your kids won’t teach you, someone from the mall phone shop or your local library might be able to help you navigate these seemingly strange things. You’ll find they’re not so strange at all. They simply require practice.

Myth No. 2: Digital Apps Are Too Complicated

Along with the generational myth is one of difficulty. Apps are often viewed as complicated tools whose operation seems unclear to the average person. Complicating this myth is the fear that misuse of an app can lead to damage to the phone or leave one’s money and/or personal data at risk. What if I press something wrong?

Most apps in use today include something called UI/UX, or User Interface and User Experience, in their design. These disciplines go hand in hand to ensure that the app you’re using can be operated safely and reliably. Many have prompts and other warnings before an input or transaction you make is final, so it all boils down to attentiveness and basic reading comprehension.

Many app-linked products and services include processes that allow you to reverse mistakes or request corrections. While the processes involved in reversing your in-app mishaps can take time, products and services that make use of digital apps will often have failsafes in them and processes to deal with most issues.

Myth No. 3: Digital Apps Always Consume Too Much Data

This is a partially true myth, but only given a certain set of apps and how you use them.

Here are some of the top bandwidth-using digital apps:

  • Streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify
  • Social Media apps, especially video-heavy ones like TikTok and Instagram
  • Mobile Gaming apps that need to be always online

But these digital apps eat bandwidth only when you’re using them, and depending on how you use them. For example, if you’re viewing a YouTube video on your small smartphone screen at HD quality, that will definitely eat up your bandwidth quickly when you don’t need that level of detail on a small screen. It might be better to switch to lower-quality viewing. 480p is often fine on a small smartphone screen.

Additionally, some apps and services offer ways to get around high bandwidth use, like unlimited viewing on a streaming app for a fixed price every month or even downloading the media to minimize Internet use.

Other apps, like banking apps, don’t have high bandwidth consumption. You can always check your smartphone’s Settings to see which of your apps keep consuming your Internet.

Myth No. 4: Digital Apps Reduce Productivity

This is another myth that’s only true for a certain class of applications and how users use them. Many apps that impact productivity are in Myth No. 3, while others question the program’s ability to cut down worktime on a task.

Entertainment and gaming apps can impact productivity, and fixing that is a matter of user discipline. Music streaming apps can help some users focus and maintain a productive rhythm.

For most work apps, their design is to make work easier by making it accessible wherever there is Internet access and by providing the tools and work environment that allow greater productivity.

Myth No. 5: Digital Apps Are Inherently Unsafe for Your Money and Data

One of the most persistent digital app myths is that they make you more susceptible to scamming and even the hijacking of your digital wallets. Some people insist paper money is safer, or that apps have so many issues that make online transactions dangerous.

In the first place, cash and coins can be vulnerable to theft and loss, and carrying huge sums can be dangerous for ordinary people. Add to that the inconvenience of lining up or keeping up with business hours.

Digital apps allow you to bypass lines and business hours, and help you easily manage huge sums through seamless fund transfers between your banks and a digital wallet or e-commerce site. On top of that, you have records of the transactions you make, giving you a paper trail to help you fix any issues.

Any app that handles e-commerce or online banking should be backed by strong security protocols. The organizations behind them must comply with regulations and face legal consequences if they fail to protect users.
