Car Insurance for First-Time Buyers in the Philippines: What You Need to Know

For first-time car buyers in the Philippines, this guide covers CTPL and how to choose the right car insurance coverage for your needs.

For many Filipinos, buying your first car is more than just a financial decision—it’s a proud milestone and a rite of passage. It marks the moment when your hard-earned money turns into something tangible, meaningful, and mobile. More than the prestige, it’s a symbol that you’ve arrived: you’ve made a true adult purchase.

As you think about where to go for your first road trip or the after-casa add-ons that are going to be your ride’s signature bling, there’s something you, as a responsible adult, have to consider with your first car seriously.

And that is your first car insurance.

Car Insurance 101: What Every First-Time Owner Needs to Know

First, Comprehensive Third Party Liability (CTPL) insurance is required by law. Even before you can register your first car with the LTO, you have to get this. CTPL isn’t for you or your car: it’s for any pedestrians you might accidentally harm. It pays for their medical bills or, God forbid, funeral costs. It can even pay for your legal fees.

Second, most car dealers make it easy to insure your car by bundling it with your purchase. While this may be the peak of convenience, you have limited options, and the premium can and often does cost more. While effort might be involved, it would be in your best interests, and your car’s, to get your own insurance and tailor-make it to your needs and those of your car.

Third, there is no one mega bundle of car insurance that covers everything, at least off-the-shelf, so to speak. For example, as we explained in our Acts of God article, that kind of premium for cars only covers damage from typhoons, floods, and fires. It does not include damage from volcanic eruptions. You have to get that premium separately.

Yes, it will cost you more, but you do want to be covered when you inevitably go to Tagaytay and Taal decides to go active, covering your car in ashfall, right?

What Affects Your Car Insurance Premium?

So, what should you keep in mind when shopping around for your first car insurance?

  • Your driving style and habits. Are you a defensive driver, or do you feel like you’re in F1 when you’re behind the wheel? If you have a driving record, it will figure in here when determining your premiums.
  • The car itself. Some cars are more expensive to insure than others. The more luxurious a brand is, the higher its premiums, for one. Does the car have additional safety features that make it safer to drive? Check to see if there are laws and policies that give discounts to certain types of cars, like EVs and hybrids.
  • Where you’re driving the car. Like most first-time car owners, you’re probably mostly going to use it in an urban area, so your concern is more for collision damage, especially in the mean streets of Metro Manila. Other considerations include any extensive off-road use of your car, or if it will also serve as a hauler for a business venture.
  • How old are you? Younger drivers tend to cost more in terms of premiums, as they are often regarded as inexperienced. This is especially true for teenagers.
  • Local requirements. Some cities and municipalities might have additional ordinances and other regulations that could affect the costs of premiums or even require insurance coverage.

Types of Car Insurance Coverage to Consider

We’ve already mentioned the CTPL above, which, again, is mandated by law. You will most likely get comprehensive insurance to cover damage to your vehicle. Some other insurance coverage you might want to consider includes:

  • Personal Accident Insurance. This provides vehicle accident insurance to you or your loved ones, paying for medical bills and even providing death benefits depending on your premiums.
  • Acts of God. Also known abroad as the force majeure clause and Acts of Nature in the Philippines, this is premium coverage for car damage due to extreme weather conditions like damage from typhoon winds, floods, fires, and volcanic eruptions.
  • Roadside Assistance. This is insurance for when your car breaks down. This can help cover costs for repair and towing, especially in locations where both are hard to get.

When it comes to vehicle insurance, it’s important to know and understand what the inclusions and exclusions are to the coverage you’re getting. Be sure to discuss these things with your insurance broker before paying for any coverage.
