You’ve just graduated. Congratulations! Waiting for you after the post-ceremony party is a brand new set of wheels. You’ve passed your license tests, and you’re ready to take your new car out for a spin.

Before you do, let’s talk about a key responsibility all drivers and motor vehicle owners in the Philippines need to have: motor insurance, and why you must understand the reasons for having one.

What CTPL Covers and Why You Need It

Often referred to by its initials, CTPL is the most basic motor insurance required by Philippine law. You cannot register a vehicle with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) or renew its registration without getting CTPL insurance. That’s the “compulsory” part.

But why is it compulsory? Because the drafters of the law recognized the reality of motor vehicle accidents and that affected people need to have their medical needs met.

The “third party” refers to any passenger riding with you who is not your employee or a family member within the second degree of consanguinity or affinity. Pedestrians caught in the accident are also part of this “third party.”

If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident and it is proven that the fault is yours, the liabilities for any third party caught in the incident will be covered by CTPL. The coverage does not include injuries to you, your family members, your employees, or damage to the car.

Aside from covering medical bills and compensating families for any fatalities, CTPL also covers your legal fees.

Protecting Your Passengers with Additional Coverage

Unnamed Passengers insurance is an add-on (often called a rider) that you can attach to motor insurance. Recall that CTPL only covers liabilities to third parties caught in a vehicle accident caused by you. This rider provides coverage for other passengers, like friends and family.

Additionally, this rider covers liabilities regardless of who’s at fault. So aside from providing liability insurance to your near and dear in case of an accident, you have them covered, no matter who caused the incident in the first place.

Protecting Your Car from Accidents and Natural Disasters

Sometimes the damage isn’t (really) your fault. You’ve probably seen images and videos of a properly parked car minding its own business when suddenly a tree falls on it. You live in a country hit by an average of more than a dozen storms each year.

And then there are sudden downpours that can instantly flood an area, like the two incidents in Quezon City in 2025 that managed to flood even Ateneo de Manila University.

Own Damage coverage is another rider that protects your car from damage caused by natural calamities and some man-made events like riots, vandalism, or even terror attacks. Acts of Nature riders only cover damage from natural disasters, making them more specific and often cheaper as a rider, if you’re fine with the limited coverage.

If you want to know more about Acts of God, we wrote an article on it.

How Motor Insurance Protects You on the Road

Car accident insurance is a good way to ensure your new ride is not only covered from any damage done to it but also to deal with any liabilities from mishaps to passengers and pedestrians involving your vehicle. No one wants to be in a traffic accident, but Metro Manila roads present real risks for new drivers. We wrote an article about the dangers to new drivers. If you want a deeper dive into it.

Just remember that the CTPL required by Philippine law is very basic and does not include items we mentioned above, like Own Damage and Unnamed Passengers. Riders are options that enhance the coverage of basic packages like CTPL, so it is best to choose coverage that fits your budget and needs.

Reliable Insurance Brokers are ready to help you find the right car accident insurance, especially when choosing riders that give you comprehensive coverage to meet any eventuality. Call today to start your selection and approval process and begin your journey as a safer driver.
