You may not know it, but your package has been on quite a journey before it reaches you. From the warehouse, by land, air, and/or sea, to another warehouse, then to the delivery person and onto your doorstep, that parcel has been through a lot.
It takes a lot for safe cargo delivery to happen. We’ll look at how goods get from one place to another, package transit risks along the way, and how you can deal with these challenges.
Warehouse Storage: Preparing Cargo for Transit
Your goods and products have been produced and packed, ready to start their journey to your customers. These are typically stored in a warehouse pending transfer to the main means of transportation. Dangers at this stage include:
- Mislabeling: the package is incorrectly labelled, leading to delivery delays and losses due to tracking, return, and processing costs.
- Mishandling: damage or even loss of the package due to mishandling, whether by manual labor or through the use of tools and heavy machinery.
- Storage damage: This can result from improper stacking or environmental exposure to moisture, smoke (for certain products), sand, and even biological contamination.
Moving Cargo to and from Primary Transport
Your goods are now on their way to the ship, plane, train, or long-range truck that will bring them to a distribution center, whether from your warehouse to its main cargo vehicle. Mishaps that are the leading causes of cargo damage at this stage include:
- Improper stowing: If your packages are not properly stowed, they could be severely affected by issues along the road. Impact damage to goods is common here.
- Accidents during handling: Cargo damage as goods are taken to and from the vehicle through human error or mishandling with tools and heavy machinery.
- Customs issues: Mishandling by customs inspectors and damage to packaging material that could compromise the quality of your goods.
Main Transit: Risks on the Road, at Sea, and in the Air
This is the stage where your goods are moving long distances, whether on the world’s oceans via cargo ship, in the air via airplane, in a train’s cargo carriage, or in the back of a long-range truck.
This stage exposes cargo to risks over long distances, from theft and physical damage to weather-related incidents and delays. Many package transit risks occur at this stage, including:
- Theft: Someone other than the intended recipient takes or steals your cargo. This can include actions by pirates and pilfering by crews and loaders.
- Damage or loss: Transport at this stage can be rough, and much impact or environmental damage occurs. Improper stowing can also lead to cargo damage. On ships, entire cargo containers can be lost at sea from rogue waves and other major environmental mishaps.
- Delays: indirect losses affecting your goods caused by transit or port-of-entry delays. This is often an issue for perishable items or other goods with a shelf life, but can also lead to additional costs to compensate customers due to delivery delays.
Distribution Center Storage: Preparing for Last-Mile Delivery
Your goods arrive at a distribution center and are processed for last-mile delivery to your customer.
Dangers to your cargo are almost the same as with storage at your warehouse, but they can be magnified, as distribution centers are often operated by third-party vendors responsible for storing your products and preparing them for delivery, and they often handle large volumes of products at the same time.
- Improper storage: A common problem in distribution centers, especially during peak seasons like American Black Friday and Christmas, when product orders can increase significantly. Risks can come from overstacking, falls due to stacking imbalance, and pallets breaking and crushing lighter goods beneath them.
- Natural disasters and other major events: Distribution centers are often located in major urban areas to make delivery easier. This also makes them, and your cargo, susceptible to damage from fires, floods, earthquakes, and even conflicts due to civil unrest.
Last-Mile Delivery: The Final Leg of the Journey
The last stage where your goods are moved from a distribution center to your customer. There are still plenty of challenges to safe cargo delivery at this stage, including:
- Theft: This could come from interception by criminals of your cargo, actions by the delivery agent themselves, or even people stealing packages left at your doorstep.
- Improper handling: The delivery agent processes a large volume of items, often manually. This can lead to package damage due to carelessness, inattentiveness, or other factors, especially if your goods were not properly and clearly labelled as fragile.
- Inability to deliver: The delivery agent is unable to bring the package to the customer, whether due to an inability to locate the correct address or incorrect labelling. This can lead to increased costs due to the delay and could even lead to cancellations.
