Violence against women (VAW) continues to be a critical issue in the Philippines, affecting individuals and communities across the nation. Efforts to address this problem have led to the establishment of robust initiatives and legal frameworks aimed at supporting survivors, raising awareness, and preventing further harm.

Strengthening the Fight Against Violence: Key Initiatives in the Philippines

Here are five pivotal initiatives actively working to combat violence against women in the country:

1. Inter-Agency Council on Violence Against Women and Their Children (IACVAWC)

The IACVAWC plays a pivotal role in coordinating efforts to address violence against women and children in the Philippines. Established under Republic Act No. 9262, this council unites various government agencies to ensure a unified approach to protecting victims and holding perpetrators accountable. Through programs, policies, and inter-agency collaboration, IACVAWC strives to create a safer environment for women and children.

2. 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women

This annual nationwide campaign, held from November 25 to December 12, serves as a cornerstone in raising awareness about VAW. Spearheaded by the Philippine Commission on Women, the campaign encourages individuals and organizations to take action, share information, and contribute to the elimination of violence against women. Activities range from educational seminars to community-led events, fostering widespread participation.

3. Barangay VAW Desks

Mandated under the Magna Carta of Women, Barangay VAW Desks serve as frontline support for women in local communities. These desks provide immediate assistance, referrals, and guidance for victim-survivors, ensuring accessible and community-based interventions. By integrating services at the barangay level, the government addresses VAW where it most commonly occurs—within households and communities.

4. Women and Children Protection Program (WCPP)

Managed by the Department of Health, the Women and Children Protection Program (WCPP) focuses on providing medical and psychological support to survivors of violence. It establishes Women and Children Protection Units (WCPUs) across health facilities nationwide, ensuring survivors have access to compassionate, trauma-informed care. This program plays a critical role in bridging the gap between medical assistance and legal justice.

5. Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act (RA 9262)

Enacted in 2004, Republic Act No. 9262 is a landmark legal framework in the fight against VAW. It defines and penalizes various forms of violence—physical, sexual, psychological, and economic—committed against women and their children. RA 9262 empowers victims by providing legal protection orders, counseling services, and remedies for rehabilitation and recovery.
