Why Your HMO Is Not Enough: Travel Insurance for Filipinos Explained

Learn why travel insurance for Filipinos matters, what your HMO may not cover abroad, and how travel insurance protects you from medical and travel emergencies.

For a country known for overseas workers and frequent travelers, many Filipinos still travel without travel insurance. In fact, a large number leave for business trips, vacations, or family visits relying only on their HMO or with no coverage at all.

That can become risky fast. Delayed flights, lost baggage, medical emergencies, and unexpected accidents can happen whether you’re traveling within the Philippines or overseas.

Before your next trip, it helps to understand what travel insurance covers, where your existing health coverage may fall short, and what options are available to keep you protected while you travel.

Your HMO May Not Be Enough

You might argue, but I have insurance, meaning your HMO.

The problem is that most insurance coverage is limited to a network involving certain medical facilities and geographic regions, even within the Philippines. Let’s say your work sends you to some far-flung municipality of the Republic. Sure, they may have a private hospital there, but will it accept your HMO? Do they even accept insurance plans there?

And then there’s going abroad. Does your existing plan provide you with coverage if something happens to you outside of the Philippines?

Note, too, that PhilHealth only provides basic coverage, and mostly only in the Philippines. If you suffer an accident that requires more intensive care, chances are PhilHealth will not cover it fully.

Travel Emergencies Can Get Expensive Fast

Insurance plans help you absorb the costs of sudden emergencies, and travel insurance is no different. If something happens to you while you’re out and about, you have something that will help you deal with the problem.

If you have no insurance when traveling, then the entire cost of handling the emergency must be paid out of pocket by you. This could significantly affect your finances, depending on the country or territory you are in. Regardless, medical emergencies while traveling can and will dent your on-hand budget.

The same goes for any property that gets damaged or lost. While some airlines and territories might have provisions for covering such instances, they are rare and could be limited in the amounts they cover. Without dedicated coverage, the loss of these items could be significant for you.

It’s possible to get reimbursed by your insurance provider afterward, but that depends on your plan’s terms, including details you may not have reviewed when you got it, along with a lot of paperwork. What if you missed a requirement? It’s not like you can easily go back to where it happened, right?

Some Destinations May Require Travel Insurance

While this may not be an issue with the country or territory you first entered – we’re assuming you or your employer researched this before you left – what happens when you need to hop borders? Work or leisure, you find yourself going somewhere other than your entry location, and you don’t have travel insurance. What happens?

Most places require such coverage for various reasons. No matter what those reasons are, those are the host country’s rules. And if you try to enter their borders with no travel insurance, the very least that could happen is that you’ll just be turned away. Given there’s a host of diseases going around right now, like Monkeypox and Ebola, you could even get detained for being a health risk.

Given the number of diseases circulating globally, such as mpox and Ebola, you could even be detained if you are considered a health risk.

Travel Insurance Options to Consider

If you need to travel but can’t get the appropriate travel insurance, what options do you have?

  • Consular Assistance: You can always try to get help from your country’s embassy or consulate. You are still a citizen of your country and may be entitled to certain protections abroad. This can be iffy, though.
  • Bet On Reimbursement: Some plans allow their holders to reimburse costs and damages. But this can be circumstantial and highly dependent on the paperwork you can gather. Also, unless you studiously read your contract, you might be in a situation that is an exemption of your plan.
  • Prepaid Insurance: Like prepaid load for telco services, prepaid insurance does exist. While it has its limits, such as the average 7 to 15-day lead time before it takes effect, prepaid insurance offers quick and affordable coverage. One example is an Emergency Room Card, which gives you access to emergency room services when needed. You can learn more about prepaid insurance here.
